PLAYING WITH SOUNDS (THE SKILL OF BLENDING SOUNDS) – English words made up of individual sounds. This exercise trains the children’s listening skill and the technique of blending sounds to form words even BEFORE they know what alphabet is.

Before my son started learning to read and doing phonics lesson, this was what I did and have been doing it until now…I read stories with him, but I would pause at certain words. Instead of saying the word, I say the break-up sounds of the word and he blends the sounds together and say that word. Let me show you…I’m going to read couple pages from Shine-A-Light On The Construction Site by Carron Brown. Blending “Steamroller” and “asphalt”.Even though he has started to learn phonics and able read CVC words like CAT and PIG simple words now, I continue to do this with bigger or longer words while I’m reading aloud to him. This exercise not only develops the skill of blending sounds, helps him to realize that stories are made up of words and words are made up of sounds AND have meanings, it also trains his ear to pay attention because he is expecting me to stop somewhere and he is going to fill in the blank. I call this Phonemic Awareness in practice or in context.

What do you think about this as a pre-reading activity?
